1969 Pontiac LeMans

"Mutant"

The Challenge: Duplicate this battered 1969 Pontiac "Mutant" LeMans as a 1/18 scale diecast metal scale model.	These are the pictures the owner of the real "Mutant" supplied.... not much detail, but too interesting of a project to turn away.
Since a 1969 Pontiac LeMans has not yet been produced by any diecast company, this build will have several challenging modifications in addition to the obvious parts that give the real car the nickname "Mutant".	A lot of parts needed to be made to duplicate the "Mutant". An Ertl 1969 Pontiac GTO diecast was used as the starting point. But 69 Pontiac's didn't have vent windows. The real Mutant actually has 68 Pontiac doors which have the vent windows. Rather than cannibalize a Ertl 68 GTO diecast for "just" the vent windows, it was decided to simply make a pair.
Since I had a Ertl 68 GTO diecast, a mold was made of the vent windows and a pair was cast in resin. Here you can see the completed pair with the excess material removed and test fitted.	The Trans Am fender vents were also cast in resin.
Ditto for the 1979 style Trans Am shaker hood scoop.	And the Pontiac Fiero door mirrors.
As well as the Pontiac Fiero rear wing.
A hole was cut into the hood for the T/A scoop. You can also see that the T/A fender vents have been added. The GTO front bumper has also been cut off the main body.	The "Mutant" has Cragar S/S wheels in front and and Centerline style wheels with big tires in the rear. This is a test fit of the chassis with the tires and wheels. The rear wheel outers will be added later, but this is enough to test the fit of the rear tires.
