Real Dodge Daytona's have small scoops
on top of the fenders with holes underneath.
Joe Dirt's Daytona beater is missing the fender
scoops so the holes were made including the three
small mounting screw holes where the scoops would bolt
to the fenders. A small hole was also drilled to mount
the "clothes hanger" fender antenna.
|
Joe Dirt's car is also missing the grill mesh insert
so this was carefully removed.

All of the Ertl Daytona's have a lower chin
spoiler under the nose. Of course, Joe Dirt's car is
missing this part, too, so here you can see an unmodified
Ertl Daytona chin spoiler next to the modified part with the
spoiler removed and weathered.
|
One of the most distinctive features of the
Joe Dirt Daytona is the wild, multi-color,
miss-matched body panel paint scheme.

In the last two images, you can see that the door jambs
and engine compartment have been painted in the correct 1969
Dodge "Plum Crazy" purple as is found on the actual Joe Dirt
movie prop car.
|
Another very distinctive feature of the Joe Dirt
Daytona is the "one open headlight". But, if you look at
the actual movie prop car you'll see that the closed headlight
is not closed quite all the way. Both the "open" and "partially open"
headlights were cast in resin. The flat pieces under the headlights
be explained in the next picture.
|
 |
 |
|
To mount the open headlights correctly, the nose
panel was first modified by opening up both of the
original "closed" headlights. The small flat panels shown
in the previous image are fitted from below which creates a
recessed area for the "open" headlights to fit into.
The headlight opening on the left above has this recessed panel
installed.
|
Here the headlights have been painted and installed into
the recessed sections.

|
A "clothes hanger" antenna was made to duplicate
the one shown on the actual movie car.
|
Joe Dirt's Daytona is also missing the windshield wipers
so two small "wiper mounting shafts" were fabricated
and installed to duplicate this detail.
|
 |
  |
| A "curb feeler" adds the final detail. |
