All of the Ertl Daytona diecasts come with
low-back style seats. Joe Dirt's Daytona
has 1970 style high-back style bucket seats.
Since I plan to build more than one Joe Dirt
Daytona diecast over time, a mold was made and
the correct style 1970 high-back bucket seats were
cast in resin plastic.
|
Joe Dirt's car also has a 1970's vintage under dash
mounted 8-track tape player. A duplicate was fabricated
from scratch and again, cast in resin plastic.

The "chain" steering wheel is one item that was
considered a "must have" item for this project.
|
It took some serious thought to figure out a way
to make a real chain into a fixed circle and
attach it to the spokes of the model's original
steering wheel.

This is a mock-up of the painted and detailed dash and
steering wheel, complete with under dash 8-track
tape player.

Another view showing the collumn shift better.
The actual Joe Dirt Daytona has a wild looking
sticker over the glove box and this was hand painted
for this project.

If you look closely, you will notice that the
real life Joe Dirt car is missing the interior
door panels. In order to duplicate this accurately, the
image above from a real 69 Dodge Charger inner door was
used as reference.
|
Here are the modified door panels for the scale model.
There will be a better picture of these later on.

In this mock up of the interior you can see
that the center console has been removed and filled
and the carpet was "flocked" to duplicate the movie car.
Yes, the real Joe Dirt Daytona has miss-matched "fuzzy" seat
covers in the exact colors shown.
|
A "bare foot" gas pedal and some simulated trash
on the floor provide the finishing touches before a light
weathering is added.
