Body Modifications:

This project required extensive modifications to the body and exterior to create a base model Camaro from the SS 396 diecast used as a starting point.
Here's the original front valance with chin spoiler.
And the modified valance with the spoiler removed.

The starter diecast rear quarter panel fins have a chrome detail. They are also a seperate piece as shown here.

The base model Camaro's do not have any chrome trim. In this picture the quarter fins have been filled and molded in smooth eliminating the unsightly gap the part has when left as a seperate piece. The back-up lights on the SS 396 diecast are located on the rear valance. These were removed and the mounting holes filled. A decal was made to recreate the back-up lights in the tail lights which is correct for base model Camaro.

The starter diecast came with a rear spoiler molded into the main body. Here the rear spoiler has been carefully removed and ready for paint.

All of the Ertl 69 Camaro diecasts have what I consider an unacceptable major flaw with the fit of the grill as seen in this photo. As you can see, the grill protrudes way too much and looks rather toy-like. In this picture, you can see how much better the grill looks after modification to recess it deeper into the grill opening. This modification is done to every Junkyard Jewel Ertl 69 Camaro diecast including the "regular production" scale models.

Here's the completed grill mocked up in the painted body. A blue chevy "bow tie" grill emblem decal will be installed during final assembly. The real car had a nasty dent in the driver's door. In this image you can see that the dent pattern has been duplicated in the diecast model's door.

This is the SS Camaro hood from the starter diecast. The base model Camaro's have "flat" hoods with no scoop inserts. Since no available 1/18 scale Camaro diecasts come with a "flat" hood, one will have to be created. This is the completed "flat" Camaro hood, ready for paint. It is worth noting that the "flat" Camaro hood is not actually "flat" and has a slightly depressed channel detail on each side. The SS scoops were removed and filled and then these depressed "channels" were carefully shaped into the metal of the diecast hood.

All of the body modifications have been completed and are shown "mocked up" to test for fit. All that's left is paint, weathering and final assembly.
